Veterinary Public Practice Externship Travel Award
Overview:
The American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, along with the Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, are pleased to announce the availability of funding for student travel. The purpose is to support the education and training of veterinary students interested in pursuing a career in preventive medicine fields, such as public health, food safety, epidemiology, emergency management, or other One Health-related fields. Students selected for this award will be reimbursed for travel expenses up to $1,500. Five travel awards will be announced for each application cycle. No more than one applicant per school will be selected.
Students who receive the award are required to:
- Within 14 days of travel: Complete a reimbursement form and provide receipts of eligible travel expenses (e.g., transportation, lodging, food); provide a synopsis of the experience (100 words or less) that can be shared on ACVPM’s social media; and complete a short online evaluation of their experience.
- Deliver a 5-10 minute webinar presentation summarizing the experience to ACVPM diplomates, students and faculty from other colleges, and veterinarians from associated agencies and organizations.
Eligibility:
- Veterinary students from any AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine are eligible to apply. US citizenship is not a requirement; the recipient must be able to cash or deposit a check from a US-based bank, and a US mailing address is necessary to mail the check.
- Students must be in the 3rd or 4th year of veterinary school when the externship takes place
- Students must receive college credit for the externship
- Externship must be planned to occur within the next six months, or have occurred in the past three months
Application Deadlines:
- Application deadlines are March 1st and October 1st annually.

- Cover letter that includes:
- The purpose of the intended externship and how that experience is relevant to the mission of ACVPM.
- Description of how individual life experiences have led you to have an interest in One Health/preventive medicine
- Description of how fulfillment of this externship will help you to contribute to your community (e.g. CVM community).
- Resume
- A description of the proposed externship and budget, including location, hosting organization or agency, timeframe (exact dates, if possible), activities, and the learning objectives you hope to achieve. Please also include a statement verifying that you will receive college credit for this experience.
Selection Criteria:
Students will be scored and selected by a review committee based on the following criteria:
- Evidence in resume and cover letter to support interest in a career in preventive medicine/One Health
- Strength of reasoning and writing quality demonstrated in the cover letter and externship description
- Applicability of externship experience to the fields of preventive medicine or One Health
