Thomas Cecere, DVM, MS, PhD

Headshot of Thomas C.

Thomas Cecere is a former Public Corporate tracker who received his DVM from VMCVM in 2005. He went on to complete a combined residency masters program in anatomic pathology from North Carolina State University in 2008, and returned to VMCVM where he completed his PhD in viral immunology in 2012. He is currently an Associate Professor of Anatomic Pathology at VMCVM.

As a child, Cecere loved the book series “All Creatures Great and Small” and wanted to be a country veterinarian. He volunteered at a small animal clinic, where he eventually became employed and received outstanding support and mentorship. During veterinary school, he lived and worked on a beef farm in exchange for rent. He developed a passion for production medicine and diagnostic pathology. He applied to and was accepted into several residency programs, but decided to pursue pathology and continue his education.

While at NC State, he enjoyed teaching on the necropsy floor and was invited by mentors to lecture about respiratory pathology. Grateful for the mentorship that he received throughout his journey, Cecere decided to become involved in education.

In his current position, Cecere is able to combine his love of diagnostic pathology with educating. While he enjoys teaching students about pathology, he also receives gratification from what students teach him. One of his favorite aspects of his career is watching students graduate or return after graduation.
