The CPCVM oversees and administers two travel award programs for students.

  • The United States Animal Health Association (USAHA) / American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) Veterinary Student Scholarship provides travel stipends to attend the annual USAHA / AAVLD fall conference. Awards are competitive. The application period typically opens in late August.
  • The Veterinary Public Practice Award provides travel reimbursement up to $1,000 for students who participate in public practice veterinary externships. Awards are competitive. The application deadlines are January 31st and July 31st every year.

Application deadline is Friday, September 7 at 5 p.m.

Overview:

The Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine if offering multiple awards to students interested in one of two career paths: veterinary public practice or veterinary diagnostic laboratory medicine to offset travel and other expenses to the United States Animal Health Association (USAHA) and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) joint annual meeting. Registration fees will also be waived.

When: 

Thursday, October 10, 2024 thru Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

Attendance for the whole conference is not mandatory.

Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, TN. 

How:

To apply you must be a veterinary student in the Uninted States, submit a 1 page essay about your experience and interest in veterinary public practice and/or veterinary diagnostic laboratory medicine, your career aspirations, and what you hope to gain by attending the meeting and your CV or resume by September 7, 2024 at 5 p.m.

Overview:

The American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, along with the Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to announce the availability of funding to support the Veterinary Public Practice Externship Travel Award. The purpose of this competitive travel award is to support the education and training of veterinary students interested in pursuing a career in public health, food safety, epidemiology, or other One Health related fields. Students selected to receive this award will be reimbursed for travel expenses up to $1000. Applications will be reviewed twice per year and five travel awards will be announced for each application cycle.

Eligibility:

  1. Veterinary students who are US citizens from any AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine are eligible to apply
  2. Students must be in the 3rd or 4th year of veterinary school when the externship takes place
  3. Students must receive college credit for the externship
  4. Externship must be planned to occur within the next six months, or have occurred in the past three months

Students who receive the award are required to:

  • Within 14 days of travel: Complete a reimbursement form and provide receipts of eligible travel expenses (e.g., transportation, lodging, food); provide a synopsis of the experience (100 words or less) that can be shared on ACVPM’s social media; and complete a short online evaluation of their experience.
  • Within 90 days or prior to graduation, whichever comes first: Deliver a presentation about the experience to faculty and students at their college. The presentation content should include what they learned, how their experience translates to Preventive Medicine/One Health, and very briefly discuss the ACVPM and its mission.

  1. Cover letter that includes:
    • The purpose of the intended externship and how that experience is relevant to the mission of ACVPM.
    • Description of how individual life experiences have led you to have an interest in One Health/preventive medicine
    • Description of how fulfillment of this externship will help you to contribute to your community (e.g. CVM community).
  2. Resume
  3. A description of the proposed externship and budget, including location, hosting organization or agency, timeframe (exact dates, if possible), activities, and the learning objectives you hope to achieve. Please also include a statement verifying that you will receive college credit for this experience.

Selection Criteria:

Students will be scored and selected by a review committee based on the following criteria:

  1. Evidence in resume and cover letter to support interest in a career in preventive medicine/One Health
  2. Strength of reasoning and writing quality demonstrated in the cover letter and externship description
  3. Applicability of externship experience to the fields of preventive medicine or One Health
